Reading Instruction

PROGRAM RATIONALE
By the time they reach high school, students have learned to read; however, many are not yet proficient at reading to learn. A recent issue of Educational Leadership states, "Too often, students have an incomplete notion of what reading actually means. They do not realize the complexities of reading to learn." In step with the latest in educational research, the Reading Department of H-F provides crucial pathways to academic success for students from Grades 9-12.

PROGRAM GOAL
As they expand their reading comprehension, vocabularies, writing and study skills, students enrolled in reading classes at H-F will improve their academic performances across the content areas and build lifelong literacy skills.

Seminar in Teaching & Learning

PROGRAM RATIONALE
Research demonstrates time and again that the most successful students feel safe and connected to those around them. Designed for both transfer and current H-F students, Seminar in Teaching & Learning is a community of learners - students, peer leaders and teacher facilitators - working together in an atmosphere of high expectations and mutual respect to achieve academic success for all.

PROGRAM GOAL
Students will improve academic performance, develop a sense of cognitive self-awareness, hone critical-thinking skills, develop a sense of personal self-awareness and, ultimately, become active participants at Homewood-Flossmoor High School.
