Standards-Based Learning (SBL)
Homewood-Flossmoor High School is dedicated to engaging students in experiences that build skillful learners who embody the Profile of a Viking competencies and meet the content standards provided by Illinois State Board of Education. Our students learn in a culturally responsive and innovative learning environment through a standards-based curriculum that prepares them to be college, career and life ready.
Standards-based learning:
- Provides all students with access to high quality learning experiences;
- Gives students a role in designing and executing learning plans;
- Develops student agency in the learning process;
- Helps teachers provide clear feedback to students on their learning progress; and
- Provides families with clear outcomes for student learning.
HF offers a rigorous curriculum representing the planned standards-based outcomes that students are expected to achieve. The curriculum is organized into instructional units with:
- Proficiency scales developed from standards,
- Assessments aligned to standards/scales,
- Learning experiences aligned to standards/scales, and
- Instructional resources that support student learning.
HF’s teachers collaborate to develop responsive and research-based curriculum by participating in the following five phases of curriculum development:
