As part of its annual HFU Workshops for Parents series, Homewood-Flossmoor Community High School will offer a special film screening and discussion of the IndieFlix original documentary, Angst, on Monday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. in the school’s Mall Auditorium.
The Angst project is designed to raise awareness around anxiety with an emphasis on youth and families. The film features candid interviews with kids and young adults who suffer — or who have suffered — from anxiety and what they've learned about it. The film includes discussions with mental health experts about the causes of anxiety and its sociological effects, as well as help, resources and tools.
Following the film, Lauren White, H-F licensed clinical social worker, will lead a panel discussion of local professionals, including: Dr. Holly Houston, licensed clinical psychologist, from the Anxiety and Stress Center; Bill Knor, licensed clinical professional counselor, from the Anxiety and Stress Center; Patricia Lazuka, licensed clinical social worker, from D’Amico & Associates in Counseling, LLC; Karen Farrell, midwest director of the American Board of Professional Psychology; and Dr. John Farrell, a private practice psychologist.
The Monday evening community screening follows viewings by James Hart School and Parker Junior High School 8th Graders, and precedes viewings by H-F High School Health and IB students later in the week.
According to White, this is a very important workshop for students, families and the greater H-F community.
“Many of us have seen a rise in anxiety and its effects in our own lives or in loved ones,” says White. “H-F is invested in our students’ and community’s social-emotional growth, and we are excited to explore this topic and discuss strategies to cope and support one another.”
