Homewood-Flossmoor Community High School is pleased to announce that a member of its senior class — Joy Woods of Flossmoor — was selected by Broadway In Chicago as one of 24 nominees to participate in this year's Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards, part of the Jimmy Awards / National High School Musical Theatre Awards. Woods is nominated as Best Actress, and at the awards competition she will be part of a group performance of My Shot from the musical Hamilton and a solo performance of Fabulous, Baby! from the musical Sister Act, in which she played the role of Deloris Van Cartier at H-F this past November.
All of the nominees will participate in the awards program, set for Monday, June 4, at 6:30 p.m. at the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place in Chicago. Sponsored by NBC 5, the Illinois chapter of the Jimmy Awards serves as an annual national celebration of outstanding achievement in musical theatre performance by high school students. During a pre-awards workshop, nominees will audition for a panel of casting agents and theatre professionals who will choose the Best Actor and Best Actress awards. Recipients of the Best Actor and Best Actress awards will represent the state of Illinois at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards/The Jimmy Awards, and be sent by Broadway In Chicago to New York for a week of private coaching, master classes and rehearsals with theatre professionals. The week culminates with a performance on Broadway.
