Bel Canto Choir
This choral group is open to any student who has no previous experience in a high school choral group. All freshman females who enroll in vocal music are placed in this chorus. Bel Canto Choir may be elected as many times as a student wishes to take it. At least three performances are presented each year and a variety of music of all styles and periods is presented. Performances, while outside of class hours, are considered a part of course requirements and attendance is expected. Two, three and four part music is performed from memory at concerts. Educational emphasis is placed on vocal development, musicianship, musicality and self-direction.
Concert Choir continues the objectives of Bel Canto Choir by further developing the student’s musicianship both individually and in a group. This choir prepares students for entrance into Viking Choir. Three major performances per year include Music Department on Parade Concert and Winter Choral Concert, which are in combination with other choral groups, and a spring concert Songtime with Bel Canto Choir. Performances, while outside of class hours, are considered a part of course requirements and attendance is expected. Emphasis is on training singers to meet advanced standards of excellence in singing choral literature. Ensembles, solos and other special opportunities may be given to especially talented members of the chorus.
This is the top-rated choral group in the school, numbering up to 100 voices. Admission is by audition. To be eligible to audition for Viking Choir, students must fulfill the following requirements: 1) at least one year in an H-F choral group; or 2) one year in orchestra or band; or 3) transfer from another high school where the student was enrolled in the top-rated mixed chorus, or was scheduled for the top rated choir. Viking Choir performs literature of all musical styles, periods and levels of difficulty. Viking Choir performs publicly, makes special recordings, television appearances, and, upon occasion, performs with international recording stars. Performances, while outside of class hours, are considered a part of course requirements and attendance is expected. The pace is rapid and the degree of difficulty is greater for Viking Choir than for other choral groups.
