Who can participate in DECA?

We encourage all students - Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior or Senior - to participate. It's never too early or too late to sign-up. Contact sponsors: Christina Clark and Mike O'Neill.

What is the purpose of DECA?

Homewood-Flossmoor’s DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) Business Club is a student-centered organization whose program of leadership and personal development is designed specifically for students interested in all areas of business. Activities include social functions, field trips, and conferences, which are held locally, within the state and nationally. At these functions and conferences students are exposed to applications of business principles and concepts through real-life organizations; and compete in various events including: Role-Plays, in which they act out a real-life business situations with judges. They also compete using a content knowledge exam unique to their area of business, and lastly they compete using a business math / economics test.

There are currently 200,000 student DECA members throughout the world. They have the opportunity to participate in competitions, earn thousands of dollars in scholarships, and gain invaluable business and networking experiences.

Competition materials and information that students are exposed to are directly linked to the curriculum in our business & economics courses here at H-F and at the college level. The club begins in August and runs through the first week in May, meetings are every other Thursday. Competitions start in January and end in May.

What Do You Do In DECA?:

The Fun: Students will have the opportunity to participate in multiple business/marketing-related field trips, including marketing workshops prior to attending a Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bulls game.  Also a trip up to Six Flags to explore the many ways that marketing impacts the day-to-day business of an amusement park.

The Business: There are three levels of competition beginning with our Sectional Competition in January, featuring more than 450 students from the South Suburbs. Qualifying students then move onto state competition in March against more than 1,000 students from all over the great state of Illinois. Lastly, if they qualify, students will have the opportunity to travel to locations such as Anaheim, Calif., and Orlando, Fla., to compete in International Competition where more than 14,000  students come together for the chance to be called the best in the world.

Our goal is to educate as many students at H-F about the varying offerings of the business world. Many students find their career paths due to participation in DECA. Additionally, we want to qualify 50+ people for state, and 20+ people for internationals and bring home as many top 3 finishes as possible.
