Summary: This course is designed to be the equivalent of a college survey. It
aims to introduce students to the basic concepts of human geography and provide
a geographic framework for the analysis of current world problems through the
use of case studies. The course offers students the opportunity to understand
the tools, themes, and concepts of geography; to think critically about
geographic problems on the global, national and local scales; to appreciate the
diversity of global cultures, including their cultural and economic
characteristics; to understand how cultural landscapes are created and how they
change over time; and to prepare for the Advanced Placement Human Geography
examination. Students who obtain credit in Geography #1123 may not
enroll in this course.
III Course Goals
As a
result of the study of geography, students will:
1)
understand how to use maps as tools to process information from a spatial
perspective.
2)
understand how to analyze the spatial organization of people, places and
environments on the Earth’s surface.
3)
understand the physical and human characteristics of places
4)
understand how people create regions to interpret the Earth’s complexity.
5)
understand the characteristics and spatial distribution of ecosytems on the
Earth’s surface.
6)
understand the characteristics, distribution and migration of human populations
on the Earth’s surface.
7)
understand the characteristics, distribution and complexity of the Earth’s
cultural mosaic.
8)
understand how human activity modifies and is modified by the physical
environment.
