About our School...

Homewood-Flossmoor High School is a comprehensive community high school located in the south suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. H-F serves a community that consists of the villages of Homewood and Flossmoor, and portions of Chicago Heights, Glenwood, Hazel Crest, and Olympia Fields, including school districts 153, 161, and 167. The area is served by Homewood-Flossmoor Park District. Other area sites include Homewood Library, the Flossmoor Library, and the H-F Star Newspaper. Currently, 2,600 students are enrolled.

The student body is diverse, spirited, and motivated. 92% of H-F graduates intend to go on to college with 70% planning to attend a four-year college or university. Average daily attendance is 93%, and the graduation rate is 92%. For more details on these statistics, see our School Report Card.

H-F's comprehensive curriculum provides structure and traditional courses, yet offers students many options to explore and develop their individual talents. Students may choose from more than 150 courses. Most required subjects are taught at the essential, regular and honors level, with Advanced Placement instruction offered in 14 subject areas.

Virtually all students participate in at least one extracurricular activity. Students may choose from 60 clubs, 22 intramural programs, and 26 interscholastic sports. Over 1,700 students participate in intramurals, and 1,200 participants are active in interscholastic athletics.

History of Homewood-Flossmoor Community High School

Homewood-Flossmoor Community High School opened in 1959 - the result of commitment on the part of district residents to the idea of a community high school with high standards for students and staff, and a solid goal of excellence in education.

H-F's opening year saw enrollment in all four grades at 1170 students. There were 51 classrooms, which included ten English classes, ten Social Science, eight Science, six Mathematics, five Foreign Language, three Physical Education, one Homemaking, three Industrial Arts, two Art, and three Music classes. A cafeteria, library and administrative area were also included.

These days the commitment to excellence continues. Homewood-Flossmoor Community High School received state nomination in the U.S. Department of Education's Blue Ribbon Schools Program in 1994-95. The school was also nominated for recognition in the Department of Education's Drug-Free School Recognition Program, becoming the only high school in Illinois to be nominated as both a Blue Ribbon and a Drug-Free School.

The Homewood-Flossmoor School District now encompasses nearly 11.5 square miles with a population of about 42,000 residents in Homewood, Flossmoor, and parts of Chicago Heights, Glenwood, Hazel Crest, and Olympia Fields. The community is culturally diverse and demographically upscale with average family incomes ranging from $32,000-$111,000. Residential home values average between $68,000-$214,000. An Ice Arena, twelve tennis courts, a jogging track, and a fitness trail running throughout the campus are indicative of the close relationship H-F enjoys with the community and the opportunities available to students.

Today, approximately 2,600 students, grades nine through 12, receive daily instruction. More than 90% of our graduates continue on to college - many pursuing studies at some of the most prestigious schools in the U.S. and abroad.

Following a decade of preparation and fiscal planning over the years, we completed a $20 million facilities renovation. Today we have modernized and wired all classrooms for computer-assisted instruction and satellite reception. The district expanded the library and audio-visual facilities; added a new music wing for chorus, band and orchestra; enhanced the dressing and storage areas for our drama department; and constructed an Olympic-style swimming pool. In support of our Technology Plan, as part of the renovation project, the district built a Technology Center to house two Macintosh labs, an IBM lab, and a Computer User's Center. The quality of our Technology Plan is apparent in its curricular inclusiveness and was recently recognized by Electronic Learning Magazine as one of the nation's five best.

Refusing to rest on its success, the school continually strives for improvement. The H-F staff is immersed in this process through its efforts in the School Improvement Plan. The School Improvement Plan committee helps departments establish learning outcomes in various curricular areas, devise assessments to measure student achievement, and make necessary changes in order to continuously improve student performance. It is our belief that all students can learn and be successful, and to that end we continue to be committed to maintaining the excellence of our past while preparing students for the future.

H-F's Guiding Principle is to take community high school age youth of this district and advance them as far and as fast toward responsible adulthood as individual student attitudes, individual teacher insights, and the overall administrative and community support will permit and sustain.

H-F must prepare each student for whatever next step he/she aspires to take: college or university, commerce or labor, arts or service. H-F must be a human institution in which the highest possible standards of performance, character, integrity and moral values are inspired. The ultimate measure of its success will be the extra share that its graduates contribute to a free society.
