Personal Fitness Syllabus


Materials
·       Foundations of Personal Fitness text book(provided)
·       Heart Rate Monitor Strap (provided)
·       PE uniform – H-F PE shirt, yoga/sweat pants, socks, appropriate athletic shoes
·       Water Bottle
·       Notebook for vocabulary work
·       Hand wraps (recommended for kickboxing – not required!)

Overview

The personal fitness curriculum is designed with the intent of improving the many aspects of wellness including, cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, mental health, nutrition, and personal safety.  This class incorporates a wide variety of activities in order to target every one of these aspects.  Activities range from step aerobics, kickboxing, self-defense, and dance to Pilates, yoga, weight training, and stress management techniques.  Students will also be introduced to new fitness technology, which will help monitor their progress and workouts.  This class was designed to prepare the student to remain active and healthy outside of the high school setting, by introducing activities that one could encounter in a recreational or health club setting.

Objectives
·  Increase flexibility and circulation through yoga and stretch routines
·  Decrease stress and mental anxiety through personal reflection and relaxation techniques
·  Improve cardiovascular fitness by monitoring various aerobic activities with fitness technology
·  Build muscular strength and endurance through numerous forms of resistance training
·  Analyze fitness data pertaining to one’s own state of wellness
·  Develop an understanding of personal safety and a heightened sense of awareness through self   defense instruction
·  Create personalized routines in yoga, dance, and resistance training


Assessments

·  Pre-fitness Assessment:  Assesses the 5 components of fitness at the beginning of A-quarter, so that a baseline for comparison is established.
·  Post-fitness Assessment:  Assesses the 5 components of fitness at the end of B quarter, so that progress can be noted
·  Yoga Assessment:  Assesses your ability to tailor a yoga routine to meet your personal wellness needs.
·  Heart Rate Monitor Assessment:  Assesses cardiovascular work on a week to week basis
·  Routine Assessment:  Assesses the ability to create a step aerobics routine
