Dance 1

Prerequisite: Freshman and Sophomore P.E.
Open to: Juniors and Seniors
Length: Semester
Credit: .5
Summary: This course will take students though the history and performance of various dance styles as well as multicultural dance. This class also offers beginning level technique instruction in ballet, modern, jazz, hip-hop and tap. Through nutritional lectures and dance fitness exercses, students will also understand why and how to take care of their bodies properly. Students are evaluated mainly on their technique and understanding of various dances.

Textbooks and Materials
Gym shirt and shorts
 
Black stretch pants or Yoga pants
Gym shoes and socks for fitness days
Ballet shoes or jazz shoes (not required but recommended); no flip-flops or bare feet
 
Dance Folder – since there is no required text you will be receiving a lot of handouts in class, so it is suggested that you keep all of those handouts in a dance specific folder.

Course Outline

Quarter 1:
Students will go through technique and history of ballet and modern dance. There will be an evaluation of technique and vocabulary understanding at the end of the quarter. This will be based on the student's performance of a dance choreographed by the instructor that incorporates all dance elements in both ballet and modern that students will be assesd on.

I.      Mondays – Dance Fitness/Health (Ab Labs)
                Objectives
        Identify 3 personal goals to improve themselves as dancers
        Explain strategies and exercises to prevent dance injuries
        Create their own warmup and discuss how that warmup prepares the body and mind for expressive movement


II.     Unit 1 – Ballet 1
                Objectives
        Demonstrate strength, flexibility, agility, and coordination in locomotor and nonlocomotor movements
        Perform technical skills with artistic expression, clarity, and musicality
        Describe the action and movement elements observed in ballet using appropriate dance vocabulary
        Demonstrate the ability to remember extended movement sequences


III.    Unit 2 – Modern
                     Objectives
        Accurately transfer patterns from the visual to the kinesthetic
        Formulate and answer questions about how movement choices communicate abstract ideas in dance
        Demonstrate understanding of how personal experience influences the interpretation of a dance
        Create a dance that successfully communicates a topic of personal significance
        Create a dance that effectively communicates a contemporary social theme

                                                

IV.      – Dance History
                     Objectives
        Competently perform folk and/or classical dances from various cultures
        Learn from resources in their own community a folk dance of a different culture and the                                        cultural/historical context of that dance; effectively sharing the dance and it’s context with their peers
        Describe the role of dance in at least 2 different cultures
        Analyze how dance and dancers are portrayed in contemporary media



Quarter 2: The second quarter will take students through jazz and hip-hop styles of dance as well as reviewing technique and vocabualry from ballet and modern. Students will learn dances from each of the four styles and will be evaluated on one dance that combines the jazz and hip-hop styles.  There will also be opportunities for students to form groups and choreograph their own dances using one of the four dance styles. This dance will be presented to the class on assigned dates.


Grading:

- 50% of your grade will be based on participation, behavior, and dress attire.
- 50% of your grade will be based upon physical and mental comprehension of the dance styles studied.  The break down of points is as follows:
