Newsweek Magazine / Washington Post Challenge Index Homewood-Flossmoor High School Named Top High School in the South Suburbs, 36th in the State (June 1, 2011) As high school seniors prepared to receive their awards and diplomas in late May, Homewood-Flossmoor High School received another honor of its own. In a report published Sunday, May 22, in the Washington Post, Homewood-Flossmoor High School was ranked one of the best high school’s in the state of Illinois and the only South Suburban high school ranked in the top 150 for the Midwest region. The 2011 High School Challenge: America’s Best High School special report ranked 1,910 public high schools according to how well they prepare students for college. Homewood-Flossmoor earned a 1.727 Challenge Index, ranking it 36th in the state of Illinois and 124th in the Midwest region. It is the only South Suburban school to score in the top 40 for the state. "We are extremely pleased with our standing," said Dr. Von Mansfield, superintendent. "However, our Board of Education, administrators, teachers and students continue to work hard as we look to even improve our standing in the future." The methodology for this year’s Challenge Index ranking, according the Washington Post’s website, was to take the total number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school in 2010 and divide it by the number of seniors who graduated in May or June of that year. Homewood-Flossmoor High School has been recognized by Newsweek Magazine in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 as one of the Best High Schools in America! Click below to view our past news releases: |
