Awards and Highlights

2008-2009

(April 2009)  Author Earl Sewell visited the H-F library on Mon. April 27. He spoke to Kevin Wall's creative writing class about his work, the process of writing a novel and the business side of publishing. After school, students and staff joined him for a discussion and celebration of the publication of his latest book, "Lesson Learned."

(March 2009) The Friends of the Library Advisory Board hosted an after school discussion of Sue Monk Kidd's work "The Secret Life of Bees" on Thur. March 26. Students and staff enjoyed scenes from the movie and sampled Southern delicacies and treats.

(March 2009) H-F’s Alana Hernandez served on the Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award Reader Panel on Sat. March 1. She met with a group of teachers, librarians and students from across Illinois to choose the final list of 22 books nominated for the 2010 award. The Abraham Lincoln Award is given annually to the author of the book voted as most outstanding by participating students in grades nine through 12 in Illinois.

(February 2009) H-F's staff and students celebrated Abraham Lincoln's 200th Birthday on Thurs. Feb. 12 in the library. Attendees ate birthday cake, signed a gigantic birthday card for Lincoln and entered their guesses in a penny contest.

(November 2008)  H-F Library Media Specialist Jane Harper presented "The Future of High School Reference" with Alicia Duell from Riverside-Brookfield high School and Mari Smith, J. Sterling of Morton East High School at the 2008 Illinois School Library Media Association statewide conference in Arlington Heights, IL.

(August 2008) Author and South Holland resident Earl Sewell revisited H-F to discuss how his new book “If I Were Your Boyfriend” relates to H-F students on Wed. July 23 in the South Building Library. Sewell visited H-F recently in March to talk about his other book “Keysha’s Drama,” which has many references to his childhood growing up on the west side of Chicago. During the visit, students had the chance to ask any questions they had for Sewell after reading the book themselves. From their questions, Sewell put together real life situation skits that helped students relate to the situations characters in the book encountered. Attendees also received a free copy of the book autographed by Sewell.
