Applied Academics Department 2010-2011 (May 2011) H-F's Machine Tool Technology students attended an awards night to honor the winners of the 2011 Precision Machining Competition. The competition is sponsored by the Tooling and Manufacturing Association, which represents more than 1,200 manufacturers in the Chicagoland area. Eleven high schools participated in the competition. Two of our students won monetary awards totaling more than $400 plus trophies. Congratulations to Matthew Leonard (1st & 2nd Place) and Allonis Brown (Honorable Mention). The team is sponsored by teacher, Mike Mikos. (April 2011) DECA members recently traveled to Orlando, Fla., for the International DECA Competition, held April 29-May 4. H-F High School was represented by 13 students. Teams consisting of students Jeremy Arkin, Jeff Williams, Ben Dreyfuss, Matt Yonover & Vince Stanfa established themselves as two of the best 16 teams out of more than 540 teams that competed in the Virtual Business Challenge category. The teams were charged with using computer software revolving around management of a retail store and management of personal finance. They were given 10 minutes to earn as much money as they could with any potential mistakes being the difference between winning and losing. The H-F DECA teams finished the competition in third and seventh place. Also in Orlando, H-F's state-champion DECA Quiz Bowl team (Troy Bergeron, Emily Drwiega, Eli Lichtenberg & Jordan Pounder) finished seventh out of 55 teams from across the globe, falling in the Elite 8 to the eventual second-place overall team from Utah. (February 2011) On Feb. 16, some of the Family, Career & Community Leaders Club members put their skills to the test by competing against many other schools at Olivet Nazarene University. We are proud to acknowledge the following awards: 2009-2010 (May 2010) On May 13, H-F’s winners of the 2010 Precision Machining Competition were honored at an awards ceremony. The competition is sponsored by the Tooling and Manufacturing Association. Eleven high schools participated. The following H-F students received trophies and monetary awards totaling over $400. (April 2010) Congratulations to the architecture students who participated in the ACE Mentor program this school year for doing such an excellent job representing our school and community. Seniors T.J. Norris, Marlena Rossi, T.K. Buchanan, and Eric Escamilla all received summer internships with Chicago-based engineering firms, while juniors Ian O'Leary and Volcue Saucier and senior Jack Edelbrock were awarded scholarships. Jack was awarded the Eli W. Cohen scholarship, which is characterized as the programs premier scholarship. H-F students were awarded 4 out of the 12 internships given this year from a group of over 140 students from all around the Chicago area. (April 2010) DECA and WHFH present: Rockie Fresh (H-F alum) live in concert! April 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium. Tickets are $5 and on sale in the campus store now!

Congratulations to State Champion DECA! 12 H-F students qualified for the
International Competition
that will be held in April. The students are: the defending International
champion DECA Quiz Bowl team of Sam Applebaum, Steve Buchko, Ben Dreyfuss (also
placed 1st overall in Virtual Business Challenge, Team 2) and Tim Weber (also
placed 1st overall in Virtual Business Challenge Team 1); Jake Karmel and Matt
Yonover-1st overall in Virtual Business Challenge on Teams 1 and 2,
respectively; P.J. Grund and Dylan Spratt-3rd overall in Buying and
Merchandising Management; Matt Christmas-3rd overall in Sports & Entertainment
Marketing; and Taylor Redick and Chanel Walker-3rd overall in Sports and
Entertainment Marketing Team Decision Making. (March 2010) Congratulations to Samantha Ehlebracht for taking first place and Marlena Rossi for being an awards finalist at this year's Midwest Creative Architecture Competition in the Interior Design Expression Contemporary House division. Both students are in the special projects drafting class and worked for several months on their designs.

Congratulations to our DECA students for their outstanding performances
at
sectionals on Jan. 29! (Dec. 2009) Photos from the Dec. 15 DECA event can be found here. (Sept. 2009) Congratulations to the H-F Racing Team and driver, senior Martin Taylor. Taylor drove the car to its fastest time of 13.8 at 104 mph. on Sept. 26. Because of this run, the team won a first place trophy. The season is officially over, but the team looks to the future for more great runs!
