Program Goal:  The Mathematics Department of H-F high school strongly believes that every student should have the opportunity to learn mathematical concepts and skills necessary to prepare them for any post secondary experience.  It is our expectation that students will reach their highest level of mathematics by utilizing critical thinking skills, engaging in exploration and discovery activities, and solving involved problems.  This will be accomplished by implementing various appropriate teaching and learning strategies, appropriate use of technology, and multiple forms of assessment.

Mathematics Goals by Teacher and/or Student:
1. Students will increase their ability to visualize, describe and analyze situations in mathematical terms.
2. Teachers will develop and implement various appropriate teaching and learning strategies.
3. Teachers will implement appropriate technology to enhance student learning of mathematics as will students utilize learned technology to increase their ability to solve mathematical challenges.
4. Teachers will develop and utilize multiple forms of assessment.

1. Provide students with opportunities to extend their engagement with mathematics.
2. Incorporate critical thinking activities on a regular basis.
3. Allow students to explore and discover concepts and procedures.
4. Give students numerous occasions to apply and connect new knowledge with existing knowledge.
5. Use technology widely and responsibly to further basic understandings and perceptions.
6. Make, explore and justify conjectures using technology.
7. Develop assessments that inform and guide teachers as they make instructional decisions.
8. Use assessment tools to enhance student learning.
9. Promote student learning through feedback from assessments.
10. Continually gather information about student progress through informal methods.
11. Ensure that all students have the opportunity to demonstrate clearly and completely their knowledge of mathematics.
12. Design lessons that respond to and build on students’ prior knowledge.
13. Create an environment that fosters students making conjunctures, experimenting with various approaches to solving problems, and constructing and responding to mathematical arguments.
14. Ask questions to challenge students with varied levels of expertise.
15. Use a variety of teaching strategies to enhance and monitor student learning.
