Program Rationale
The Homewood-Flossmoor
High School Library supports the mission and the instructional
program of the school while ensuring that students and faculty are
effective users of ideas and information. The library assists in
preparing students to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to
function in the “Information Age” and provides a positive learning
environment in which all students can become independent, lifelong
learners. The library also promotes literacy and reading for
enjoyment by providing a variety of materials and programs.
Program Goals
Information Literacy Standards for Grades 9-12
The Homewood-Flossmoor
High School Library strives to be a critical component of the
school’s total educational program. Through the instructional
activities, resources, facilities, and technologies provided in the
program, students become effective and efficient users and creators
of ideas and information. The library works toward meeting the
following information literacy standards set forth in the book,
Developing an Information Literacy Program K-12:
The 9-12 student:
Understands scope, depth and potential usefulness of
more advanced and diverse resources;
Develops and executes successful strategies to effectively access
information;
Examines and evaluates information;
Extracts relevant and essential information from sources;
Organizes and synthesizes information from multiple sources;
Creates and effectively communicates information and ideas to
others;
Selects resources based on interest, need and appropriateness;
Seeks information related to personal interests;
Understands and respects the concepts of intellectual freedom,
intellectual property and plagiarism.
Uses library media center and computer resources productively,
responsibly, independently and ethically

check out more than15,000 books per year.
The library contains
more than 35,000 items.
Approximately 70 classes
per month visit the library.
The H-F Library has 16 subscription databases and
online catalog in its “Virtual Library” and is accessible at
