World Language Department

I Course Information
French 3 Honors

II.         Course Description
Prerequisite:  French 1, French 2
Open to:  Soph, Jr, Sr
Length:  Year
Credit:  1 credit
Summary:  The main emphasis of French 3 Honors is conversation and composition based on readings from the textbook, workbook, and teacher-prepared units of study.  A continued and more concentrated study of grammar and vocabulary, a more detailed study of geography, and a more mature and in-depth approach to the culture of France and other French speaking areas are basic features of the course.  Students are expected to answer questions, give oral and written reports without using a teacher-provided model.  Answers become more intuitive than mechanical, and reflect the ability to synthesize previously learned grammatical and cultural concepts.  Grammar is covered more quickly, allowing time for the introduction of more advanced structures.  An introduction to French art and poetry is an important component of the course.  A majority of the class work is in French.

In order for the class to run smoothly, another goal is to behave in a respectful manner, complying with class rules and expectations discussed during the first week of class.

III Course Goals

The World language Department had adopted the five goal areas of the ACTFL (American council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages), also known as the five C’s of foreign language education.

·           Communication (face-to-face, in writing or through the reading of literature)

·           Cultures (gain knowledge and understanding of the cultural contexts in which language occurs)

·           Connections (to other bodies of knowledge in the target language)

·           Comparisons (and contrasts, to provide a multi-faceted view of the world)

·           Communities (participation with language in a variety of contexts, both in and beyond the classroom, and in culturally appropriate ways)

These goals are tied to national and state standards, which have various progress indicators across the continuum of foreign language learning, from levels one through five, for all languages.

Students will be expected to be prepared for class daily with the following materials:  Bon Voyage! textbook and workbook, folder, loose-leaf paper, a French-English/English-French dictionary, index cards, pens, and pencils, handouts based on units of study made or compiled by the teacher, audio-visual materials.
