Speech Team
Students compete on Speech Team in one or two of thirteen events which include both original and interpretive events. Tryouts are open to all students attending HF.
After tryouts, which usually occur in late September, students participate on either the Novice Team or the Varsity Team. Each student who makes the team is assigned a coach and works individually with that coach at least once a week. In addition, weekly team meetings are held during the season, and team practices are held before major tournaments. The teams compete in 12-15 tournaments a year.
Team Competition
Approximately 50-60 students participate on Speech Team. By the beginning of January, when Novice Tournaments end, the team is trimmed down to about three students in each of the thirteen events. By February, only one student is selected in each event for the Illinois High School Association State Competition, which takes place on three consecutive weekends in February.
Homewood-Flossmoor High School Speech Team placed 1st at the IHSA State Competition four times: 1968, 1975, 1981, and 1984.

IHSA State Champions by Event
In addition to receiving 28 State Championships, Homewood-Flossmoor High School students have received 26 Second Places, 29 Third Places, 14 Fourth Places, 17 Fifth Places, 17 Sixth Places, 4 Seventh Places,
and 1 Eighth Place.

Performance in the Round
In 1997 the IHSA created Performance in the Round, an event designed to provide students with opportunites for expanded performance with emphasis on the spoken word and physical action. Homewood-Flossmoor High School took up the challenge of the new ensemble event.
