Summary:
Students take Fundamentals of Art and Design as a first step on a journey of self-exploration and expression through the visual arts.  Assignments are the framework students use to solve problems in a visual realm.  Students use a variety of media such as pencils, ink, paint, and more to build an understanding of the elements and principles of art.  Students focus on the underlying elements and principles of art to refine their artistic expression. Art history, the process of critique, and the presentation of aesthetic issues encourage the use of abstract thought to bring comprehension of the fundamentals of art and design.  Student-created work from the class is selected for public display.

III Course Goals
 
Develop your skills in observing and reproducing images from life. ~Students will continue to develop their studio skills through practice and discussion.

Express the personal experiences and values in your artwork through written and visual critiques. ~Students will incorporate the basic language of art (Elements and Principles of Design) to engage in meaningful and insightful conversations of student as well as historic works of art.

Develop an appreciation for a personalized and individual art process as well as the art processes of others. Students will participate in the written and verbal critique and discussion of their own, peers and historic works of art.

Understand how historic and current events in life interchange and flourish within art at a personal as well as global level.  Discussion of specific art styles, attitudes and processes in student written and visual work, gallery visits and slide preparation presented in a critique format.


IV Textbooks and Materials
*No textbook is used for class.
*For this class you will need:
        A notebook or folder to keep handouts and assignments and a sketchbook.
*Students will be provided with consumables and a classroom art kit. Each student is responsible for returning the class art kit at the end of the course. If materials are missing from the kit, students will be changed a replacement fee.


V  Course Outline
Unit 1: Introduction of the Elements and Principles
·       Students will learn the elements and principles and how to actively apply them to
 
their own work and the critique of other work.
 
·       Students will learn how to use line, movement, shape, pattern and balance through a series of worksheets to prepare them for their first original piece.

Unit 2: Line
·       Students will apply their knowledge of line, movement, shape, pattern and balance to the creation of a line design.

Unit 3: Drawing Practice and Continuation of Elements and Principles
·       Students will begin a series of gesture drawings to build upon their skill of rendering realistic imagery to the page.
·       Students will begin a series of observational drawings to build upon their skill of creating realistic value and form.
·       Students will learn how to use shape, value, contrast, emphasis, and balance to strengthen their skills of drawing realistic imagery.

Unit 4: Value
·       Students will practice value and contrast through a series of worksheets to prepare them for a project centered on value.

Unit 5: Grid Drawing
·       Students will create a grid drawing of a source photo demonstrating their knowledge of contrast, value, movement, line, shape, balance, emphasis, pattern and color.

First Semester Final Exam

Unit 6: Texture
·       Students will create a scratchboard self-portrait demonstrating their understanding of non-blended value techniques to create contrast.
·       Students will also learn the basics of paint application through watercolors.

Unit 7: Color Theory
·       Students will learn color theory through the color wheel, and various color schemes.  Students will have a greater understanding of color and it’s practical applications to their own work as well as the psychology of color.
·       Students will learn through a series of worksheets how to use a brush and apply liquid medium to a two dimensional format.

Unit 8: Color Tessellation
·       Students will demonstrate their knowledge of color theory and paint application through the creation of a tessellation piece focusing on set color schemes.

Unit 9: Ceramics
·       Students will learn how to design forms in three dimensions and how to slab and coil build ceramic forms.
·       Students will utilize metaphorical imagery to build a clay form in tribute to another person.

Unit 10: Self-Portrait
·       Students will use their knowledge gained over the course of the year to create a photo realistic self-portrait in colored pencil.

Second  Semester Final Exam
