The following works were created by students in the 2004-2005 “Electronic Imaging” art class. The students in this class ranged in experience, from beginners in computer art to experienced computer artists, thus creating a wide variety of skill level and expertise in this class. The works were created using Adobe PhotoShop 7.0, Adobe ImageReady 7.0, and Painter 6.0. The Art Department at Homewood-Flossmoor High School offers traditional art courses as well as courses specifically designed to use technology. “Electronic Imaging” and “Computer Graphics and Design” are courses designed specifically to teach technological skills in art using various software programs. | The shell painting was the first project we did in this class. We looked at a shell and drew it on the computer. Then we made a palette of colors that were on the shell, and we painted the shell using the palette. The last thing we did was apply a texture to a picture we had previously taken and used it transparently on the background gradient. |

| For this project we chose a word to draw in sign language. Then we looked up the sign, posed our hand and took a picture of that pose. We then drew the hand pose, using the photo as a guide. For the background we used a simple texture and gradient with a border around it. Some part of the hand overlapped the border for a three-dimensional look. |

| After working with the idea of surrealism, we "re-visited" a landmark to create humor in a finished piece using photo retouching techniques in Photoshop. |

| For this nature design, we had to take a picture of a leaf or other natural object. We then copied and rotated the image to create a kaleidoscope. Then the next step was to duplicate that layer several times. We resized each layer and adjusted the colors so that it appeared as if the design went back into space and created depth. Finally, we had to place a natural element into the composition to create a focal point. Drop shadows and embossed edges added depth in this design. |

| These “movies” were done as an exercise in which we painted frame by frame. The subject was an egg, and we had to depict some kind of action within the animation. We used Painter’s animation feature to create these movies. | Egg Movie 1 | Egg Movie 2 | ||||
| These animation/movies started as regular video footage taken with a digital camera. The frames were imported into Painter and each frame was drawn or painted over in Painter. The added drawings were used as a kind of special effects. | Painter Movie 1 | Painter Movie 2 | ||||
| These animations were created using Photoshop and ImageReady. We either drew the frames by hand in Photoshop or Painter, or took photos of different movements of an action with a digital camera, then erased the backgrounds and placed the sequential layers on one document. We then imported the layered file to ImageReady to make a GIF animation. |

| For these textured silhouettes, we first shot photos of our classmates with a digital camera. We simplified the figures so that the whole figure contained one solid color. We added other textural photos to the figures, experimenting with different blending modes for each layer. |

| We used the theme of Time in some way, to create a finished piece that communicates the theme, using any of the software we have learned. |

| For this project we imitated the style of artist Romare Bearden. We simplified an image and filled the shapes with textures and simple colors. We strived to stylize and flatten the image, creating some expressive character in the work. |
|
|
||||
| We each chose a theme and created three pieces based on that theme or style. Everyone was able to explore a particular style or theme that best suited each individual. |
