The following works were
created by students in the Electronic Imaging class 2003-2004.
Meet the
class! (You will need a QTVR plug in for this to work.) Students in this art
class ranged in experience, creating a wide variety of skill level and
expertise in this class. The works were created using Adobe PhotoShop 7.0,
Adobe ImageReady 7.0, and Painter 6.0.
The Art Department at Homewood-Flossmoor High School offers traditional art courses as well as courses specifically designed to use technology. Electronic Imaging and Computer Graphics and Design are courses designed specifically to teach technological skills in art using various software programs. (If you click on the small preview graphic, you will get a larger version of the artwork.)

| The shell painting was the first project we did in this class. We looked at a shell and drew it on the computer. Then we made a palette of colors that were on the shell, and we painted the shell using the palette. The last thing we did was apply a texture to a picture we had previously taken and used it transparently on the background gradient. |

| Our class made a hand illustration to create the statement, “ We are H-F computer artists” using American Sign Language. We used a photocopy of our hands as a guide. Students used a monochromatic color scheme, and then added a textured background. The hands broke the border and overlapped the lettering, creating a successful composition. |

| This project was based on the surrealist movement in art. We were told to make something that looked realistic but could not ever possibly happen. We transformed two or more pictures to create a surrealistic image. |
|
|
|||
| After working with the idea of surrealism, we "re-visited" a landmark to create humor in a finished piece using photo retouching techniques in Photoshop. |

| For this nature design, we had to take a picture of a leaf or other natural object. We then copied and rotated the image to create a kaleidoscope. Then the next step was to duplicate that layer several times. We resized each layer and adjusted the colors so that it appeared as if the design went back into space and created depth. Finally, we had to place a natural element into the composition to create a focal point. Drop shadows and embossed edges added depth in this design. |

| For the self-portrait assignment, we used the program Painter to create textured images of ourselves. We took pictures of ourselves, and cloned them. Then painted the self-portraits using expressive brush strokes. |

| Our class submitted a piece of artwork to the CDW contest. The theme this year was how technology affects us in our everyday lives. Everyone entered an artwork and an essay. |
|

|
||
| For these textured silhouettes, we first shot photos of our classmates with a digital camera. We simplified the figures so that the whole figure contained one solid color. We added other textural photos to the figures, experimenting with different blending modes for each layer. |

| SIGGRAPH sponsors an art competition every year that has a specific theme. The theme for this year was Unity. All the students in the class submitted a piece of work. We had to visually convey the meaning of unity through our pieces as using original imagery and the skills we had learned in Photoshop and Painter. |

|||
| For this social commentary assignment, we each chose an issue that we would support visually in our artwork. We used metaphors and a common theme to represent our views on the chosen topic. Along with our commentary collage we also wrote a statement that would inform the viewer about the issue. |

| These animations were created using Photoshop and ImageReady. We took four photos of four different movements of an action with a digital camera. We erased the backgrounds and placed and the photos in sequential layers on one document. We then imported the document to ImageReady to make a cool GIF animation! |

| Brian Ziegler participated in the SkillsUSA contest in Springfield, IL. Students were given stock images to work with and were asked to create a promotional poster with the SkillsUSA logo and slogan Champions at work. Brian placed third with his finished poster design. |
