This year in electronic imaging, students came together to learn more about creating art using the computer as a tool. During this course we created a number of projects all enhancing our knowledge about the fundamentals of art. This is a collection of some of the student artwork that was created using the programs Adobe Photoshop and Painter. Come view our Electronic Imaging Class of 2002-03, hard at work! (You will need a QTVR plug in for this to work.) Students in this art class ranged in experience from one year to three or four years of art classes, creating a wide variety of skill level and expertise in this class.

This was the first project assigned in class. Students were asked to observe from real life and draw a shell only. Ken used a wide range of colors for the shell and the gradient for the beach and sand. He finished it up by putting a lens flare at the top of the screen to simulate the sun |

This is John’s portrait project done in his signature sketchy style. For this project the class worked in the program called Painter. John did a nice job of using the textural brushes available in the program.

For the self-portrait assignment, students were asked to use Painter to create textural images of themselves. Matt worked off of a picture of himself. He simplified his image and used filters to create the background. |

Allison used Painter software to create a colorful self-portrait using the natural media texture brushes. She then used Adobe Photoshop to create the background for her piece.

Francesca created an alternative interpretation of a self-portrait by repeating and using filters. The image exaggerates a feature and allows you to view it up close. |

This is a John’s hand illustration. It’s the sign language gesture for the word “proud”, and it’s a part of a group collage that we did as a class. John’s style was unique in its sketchy quality.

In this assignment, we were assigned to create a picture a hand displaying a word in sign language. In this picture, Sarah uses many different shading techniques, and also integrated textures into the background. |

This is another picture from the hand illustration assignment by Steve. A lot of time was spent on the individual picture that each artist has done, but when all of the pictures from this project are put together they spell out the message: “Grand ambition, positive attitude, desire for greatness, give HFHS its proud character.”

Jenna took a well-known artists’ painting and added speakers to it to make it more comical. She used a filter to make the speakers look like they were originally in the picture. |

We submitted a piece to the CDW contest, and the theme was “technology in the classroom.” Matt scanned in a pencil drawing of the character in the middle and chose a black and white color scheme to fit with the disks and the background.

The surrealism project was one of the first projects of the year. Our instructions were to create a surreal peace by changing size, wrapping texture, or giving a human non-human qualities. Ken created a person that watches himself “morph” into something else. |

Colin used Adobe PhotoShop to create his submission to the SIGGRAPH student contest. He used patterns to make the chess board stand out and added a chess piece to create more detail. He used an unusual type of font and added blue to the text to help tie the piece together.

SIGGRAPH sponsors an art competition every year that has a specific theme. The theme for the year was geometric design. Jenna took her own photo and applied different filters to it to emphasize the geometric design in the picture. |

Colin mimicked Romare Bearden’s style by creating a composition with simplified shapes. From that composition textures were added to the shapes.

During the period of time that we were creating these pieces there was a lot of social and political unrest about the conflict between the United States and Iraq. Chris felt strongly about this issue so he used his piece as a social commentary for action against Iraq. His opinion was that it was futile to let Saddam remain in power because if we did not deal with it now, the repercussions later would be far worse. |

The second part of the project was to look at the work of Joseph Cornell and his use of boxes for creating an interesting composition. We took the image we had created for social commentary and placed it in the box and then filled the box in an interesting way compositionally with other objects that support our theme. Chris used the idea of a protestors sign to make a satirical statement, “The best way to deal with a problem is to procrastinate now and suffer later.”

This project was a theme project, where we picked a theme and created three paintings based on this theme. Chris’s theme was ‘Body parts in space.’ For each of the pieces, Chris took a digital photo of his hand, face, or foot, and mixed it with outer space and light formations.
