Late last month, the Washington Post released its America's Most Challenging High Schools report, a report that ranks the nation's public high schools through an index formula that's a simple ratio: the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year divided by the number of seniors who graduated that year. The only high school listed from Chicago's South Suburbs — Homewood-Flossmoor High School District 233 — was ranked No. 45 in the state of Illinois and No. 1,527 in the country.
“We are proud of our students and staff for their dedication and commitment that affords us this outstanding honor,” says Dr. Von Mansfield, District 233 superintendent.
Just this past week, Newsweek / The Daily Beast released its 2013 America’s Best High Schools report, and Homewood-Flossmoor was once again ranked one of the top high schools in the nation. In this report, Homewood-Flossmoor was ranked No. 55 in the state of Illinois and No. 1,126 in the country.
While both publications used figures based on the 2011-12 school year, the Newsweek methodology differed from that of the Washington Post. Newsweek’s ranking was based on six categories: four-year, on-time graduation rate; percentage of graduates who were accepted to college; AP/IB/AICE tests per student; average SAT and/or ACT score; average AP/IB/AICE exam score; and percentage of students enrolled in at least one AP/IB/AICE course.
"While the metrics are specific to each publication, the results are the same," says Dr. Mansfield. "H-F is getting the job done. We compete and rank among the best schools in the nation."
Unlike Homewood-Flossmoor, many of the top-ranked high schools in both reports have selective-enrollment policies and do not admit all students residing in their boundaries. The complete Newsweek report can be viewed here. The Washington Post report is posted here.
