Band

Symphonic Band - The Symphonic Band is an honors-level instrumental ensemble, which concentrates on the analysis and performance of the highest quality musical repertoire for winds and percussion.  Selection of woodwind, brass and percussion players is by audition with the Director. Instruction stresses advanced perceptual, aural, and technical skills for woodwind, brass and percussion instrumentalists, as well as music theory, historical concepts, research, and conducting.  In addition to several formal concert, members are required to perform in marching performances as part of the Viking Marching Band, various school/community performances, and sectional rehearsals.  Attendance at these functions when scheduled outside of school hours is a course requirement.  Members of the Symphonic Band combine with the Viking Orchestra string players to form the H-F Symphonic Orchestra.  In addition, members of the Symphonic Band have the opportunity to participate in a variety of district, state and college sponsored honors level music festivals, concerts and workshops.  It is expected that students demonstrate personal initiative to prepare excellent performances, reflect on the process, and write about the process, the music performed, music in general, and music in relation to other arts and culture in which the arts are shared.  As a course in Fine Arts - Music, Symphonic Band works to achieve both the Illinois Learning Standards in Music and the National Standards for Music (Music Educators National Conference and allied organizations.)

 



Wind Ensemble - Wind Ensemble continues the objectives of Woodwind Choir, Brass Choir, and Percussion Ensemble by further developing the student’s technical, musical, and perceptual skills.  Selection of woodwind, brass and percussion players is by audition with the director.  In addition to several formal concerts, members are required to perform in marching performances as part of the Viking Marching Band, various school/community performances, and sectional rehearsals. Attendance at these functions when scheduled outside of school hours is a course requirement.  Members of the Wind Ensemble combine with the Chamber Orchestra string players to form the Concert Orchestra.  In addition, members of the Wind Ensemble have the opportunity to participate in a variety of district, state, and college sponsored music festivals, concerts, and workshops.  Upon completion of the course, students may audition for Symphonic Band.  It is expected that students demonstrate personal initiative to prepare excellent performances, reflect on the process, and write about the process, the music performed, music in general, and music in relation to other arts and culture in which the arts are shared.  As a course in Fine Arts - Music, Symphonic Band works to achieve both the Illinois Learning Standards in Music and the National Standards for Music (Music Educators National Conference and allied organizations.)

 


ConcertBand
Concert Band - The Concert Band is an instrumental ensemble for musicians who have had previous band experience and are interested in further developing their ability on their instrument.  During the school day, emphasis is placed on brass, woodwind, and percussion fundamentals for chamber and large ensemble music performance, including tonal concepts, technical skills, aural skills, rehearsal skills, and rudimentary music theory.  In addition to several formal concerts, members are required to perform for various school/community performances and sectional rehearsals.  Attendance at there functions when scheduled outside of school hours is a course requirement.  Members of the Brass/woodwind choirs, and the Percussion Ensemble combine to form the Concert Band for large ensemble performances.  In addition, members of the Concert Band have the opportunity to participate in the Marching Vikings as well as a variety of co-curricular music ensembles and activities.  All Freshmen/Transfer musicians not auditioning for the director will be placed in this course.   Upon completion of the course, students may audition for Wind Ensemble or Symphonic Band.  It is expected that students demonstrate personal initiative to prepare excellent performances, reflect on the process, and write about the process, the music performed, music in general, and music in relation to other arts and culture in which the arts are shared.  As a course in Fine Arts - Music, Symphonic Band works to achieve both the Illinois Learning Standards in Music and the National Standards for Music (Music Educators National Conference and allied organizations.)

 



Jazz Band - The Jazz Program is an extra curricular level instrumental ensemble, which concentrates on the analysis and performance of the highest quality musical repertoire for jazz bands.  Selection of players is by audition with the director.  Instruction stresses advanced perceptual, aural, and technical skills for jazz instrumentalists, as well as music theory, historical concepts, and style concepts.  In addition to several formal concerts, members perform at several jazz festivals and perform at various school/community performances, and sectional rehearsals.  Attendance at these functions is required and outside of the school day.
